April 4, 2006
The meeting was called to order at 5:46 p.m. by Chairman Dan Gonnerman.
!) Dan Gonnerman then resigned as Chairman and new officers were nominated.
Dave Deyoe was nominated for Chairman and Mary Mosiman as Co-chairman. Randy Woodbury was nominated for Treasurer and Loretta Parker as Secretary.
This motion was placed by Dave Jamison and seconded by Deanna Ward. Motion passed.
2) Chairman Dave Deyoe, then discussed that we need more delegates for the District and State Conventions. Four people were named as possible delegates. They will be contacted.
District is April 22, in Mason City and the State Convention is June 17, at HyVee Hall in Des Moines.
3) Bob Parker reported on the new website for Story County Republicans. The website can be reached at www.storycountygop.org. Bob thinks it is about 80% finished. He feels the website should teach about the Republican Party and show candidates to good advantage. Bob listed several features such as having two-discussion sites, schedule for meetings, and a page for reading list. It also has a link to the Iowa State Student website, UNI website, federal and national websites as well as a link to RPI to vote.
Some suggestions to add on a calendar were the parade dates, a volunteers list and opportunity to contribute on line for candidates.
He paid $50 for a 2 years hosting site. The cost is $15 per month.
4) Mary Mosiman talked about a fundraiser featuring Sara Taylor, Political Advisor for the President. It will be held on Thursday, May 11th at Steve Nissen’s Prairie Moon Winery.
The cost for the host committee will be $150 and starts at 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. and then it will be open to other republicans for $25 per person, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
5) Mary Mosiman reported a committee is working on a golf event scheduled for early September at Cold Water Creek.
6) Questions were raised about the volunteer list that was supposed to be given to us from the Presidential elections. Dave and Dan reported that many attempts were made to obtain the list but without success
We will still need a location for headquarters.
7) Dave Jamison reported we need a candidate for District 23 in Ames and Gilbert.
John Griswold from Boone will run for House District 46. Don Toms is Supervisor but we have an opening for one more. Also a County Attorney is needed so please let Dave Jamison know if anyone is interested.
Speakers
8) Bob Dopf then spoke to us about why he is running for Iowa Secretary of State. He has been a federal prosecutor in Des Moines and has served as the Criminal Chief, the Civil Chief and the Senior Litigation Counsel. Bob feels he is qualified to make the decisions for the office. He has served as the Federal Elections Officer for the Southern District of Iowa for the past six years and has been responsible for monitoring election related fraud and/or abuse. Bob feels the absentee ballots are the greatest risk for possible fraud along with the electronic voting machines, which can be subject to viruses.
John Griswold is from Madrid and running against Lisa Heddens. Some of his priorities are government spending, increase pensions for judges and keeping taxes low. He is concerned about involving sporting and funding in education. He believes that local schools should give the starting time.
Since this is John’s first time running for office he would welcome advice and volunteer work.
Katie Jerabek then spoke on behalf of Jim Nussle. On Saturday the 8th they hope to have a huge day of door knocking and telephone calling. They are looking to find out important issues and sign people up for yard signs and volunteering.
Nicole Woodroofe from ISU Republicans then welcomed us to stay for their meeting.
9) Motion to adjourn was made at 6:27 p.m. passed.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary Loretta Parker
